What Are Uuuuuu Doing?: Speaking at Jackson High School

I recently had the opportunity to help motivate some young girls at a high school in Miami. Teamed up with Communities In Schools, and Paragonn to make it happen. Had a great time! We talked about the agency which I was there respresenting, & also what it's like to work in the industry. I gave them self-esteem tips, and let them know of a few ways they could build up there confidence. Being a woman in todays urban society isn't easy, and theres lot's of no good that you can get sucked into, if you don't love YOU!

"Watch Me Make A Difference" Highlighting student/mentor Chayenne D. Rodriguez

Today's "Watch Me Make A Difference" post is highlighting student/ mentor Chayenne D. Rodriguez, she's making a huge difference in her community by working on building a program called "Bully Me - talk to someone on your side"

Here's her story:

To whom this may concern,

My name is Chayenne Rodriguez and I am a student at Rutgers University. I have just recently (around July 2010) started working on a program entitled "Bully Me" (with the tag like of "talk to someone on your side") for small classroom settings because I want children to know that we see what they are going through and we want to address it.

"Bully Me" is basically my way of impacting the bullying crisis that is impacting today's youth. It is a 30min presentation that focuses on the causes and effects of bullying, outside influences, and dealing with bullies. I make sure to stress that no one is a criminal and everyone in the situation is a victim (even the bully) because something is causing all of the negative energy to being given off into the atmosphere. The presentation caters toward kids in 6th-8th grade for the moment because I think that that is the main group that should be caught right before then enter high school and are let loose into that jungle. Hopefully, my youth will also add to the impact of the presentation because I know that when an adult talks about this subject it goes through one ear and out of the other, but with me doing the talking I think that the kids will see their big sister giving them advice. Soon I hope to be able to expand and make my program more versatile, but for now I just want to tackle this age group.

"Bully Me" was just approved to have its first classroom presentation for observation and then (if all goes well) it will be taken full scale in my district of residence.

"Hey! Why don't you pick on someone your own size!"

 Bullying, when will it cease? Probably never, but looking at the news, cases seem to be getting worse & worse & the victims are getting younger & younger. Someone actually asked me to write about this topic which makes me realize that it is a problem that people see rising. It makes absolutely no sense to me, kids are being killed for the most ridiculous reasons. ....Well, maybe I shouldn't  say it that way. You remember when you we're in school, those now little petty problems, back then seemed like the biggest issue in the whole entire world & you felt like life was over! Yea, the tween years. Grr. We'll now those kids are really feeling like there issues are destroying there world more then ever, so they're committing violent acts to "handle them".

 Are we not guiding our youth enough? Are we not taking on these roles as the big brothers and sisters like we should? Are we not being true mentors giving them someone to look up to, and making them feel like they have someone who's experienced but young enough for them to relate to, to be able to sit down & converse with?

 Too many questions, tooo little answers, toooo little time. We have to figure something out people! Lend a helping hand, better yet an ear. Over 65% of all the youth's issues could have been handled by just sitting down with them and listening to what they have to say, advising them, and mentoring them, making them feel good about themselves!

 I have a section in this blog called "What are Uuuu doing" and it's to highlight those who are making a difference in there community. Especially our youth. So if you're someone or know someone who wants to get there shine on, send in your story and a photo of your work and ill post it up!
